Traditional Summer Sides

It’s mid-July, you guys!

Summer is in full bloom, which means all the summer flavors and summer side dishes have been front and center at family barbecues.

Summer sides: cornbread, corn on the cob, baked beans, coleslaw

That said, when people think of traditional summer side dishes, they typically think of potato salads, baked beans, corn on the cob, macaroni salads, and of course, the star dish you are here to check out — summer coleslaw.

All that said, most American barbecues feature those premade or store-bought varieties that just aren’t as good (or good for you) as most homemade options.

So, skip tradition (in the store-bought sense) and create your own summer slaw by trying one ot these awesome summer coleslaw recipes.

Coleslaw Varieties

I’ve always been a traditional girl when it comes to coleslaw, my favorite of all time being the no longer available Chick-fil-A coleslaw that was a staple side dish in their restaurants many moons ago.

All that said, I’ve got some fun coleslaw varieties to share with you today!

From the traditional one, I’m most excited about to slaws that feature fruit and kale!

Summer Coleslaw 6 Ways

Ready to try summer coleslaw 6 different ways?

Check out these awesome summer coleslaw recipes, you guys!!

  • Traditional Summer Coleslaw

First up, the one I would consider the most traditional on the list.

This tangy coleslaw (above) via My Keto Plate features shredded cabbage and carrot as the base slaw with a simple dressing of apple cider vinegar and mayonnaise.

Add the final touches of seasonings and a little sweetener to this one, and you’re good to go!

  • Rainbow Coleslaw

While traditional coleslaw may be the main event for most, me included, I’m not going to lie, rainbow coleslaw like these next 2 recipes look pretty darn good too, you guys!

Check out these rainbow coleslaw recipes, perfect for any summer BBQ!

This rainbow carrot slaw (above) via Craving Something Healthy not only sounds pretty speedy to put together, but it also includes a mixture of staple ingredients and unique add-ins!

Throw this recipe together with staples like Greek yogurt, apple cider vinegar, and rainbow carrots. Then zest it up with ginger, honey, fennel, and scallions!

Want to know what really takes this one over the top? This recipe also calls for cranberries, apples, pecans, and pumpkin seeds, making it a wonderful transitional recipe that is perfect for late summer or early fall!

In a pinch and don’t have all the ingredients for the rainbow slow above? Give this similar cabbage, carrot, apple slaw (not pictured) via Nkechi Ajaeroh a try instead!

This one features many of the same base ingredients and flavor notes, just with a smaller ingredients list.

  • Zucchini Slaw

Ok, who knew this was a thing?

I certainly didn’t.

Not going to lie, though, I absolutely love me some zucchini and am very much intrigued by this one.

If zucchini is your idea of a great summer side dish, you might want to give this zucchini slaw (above) via Kitchen Ready Betty a try!

This recipe features the star ingredient, zucchini, but also includes easy staple ingredients such as peppers, celery, red onion, white wine vinegar, mayonnaise, and some seasonings.

I’m so looking forward to trying this one, just gotta get my non-zucchini-loving family on board first.

  • Kale Slaw

Ok, this one, definitely my style too, you guys!

I’m a huge kale lover.

I use this curly green beast as the star of many soup recipes that frequent our dinner table, and even use it as a lettuce replacement on my summer burger.

All that said, I’m the one and only kale lover in my home.

While kale has replaced the use of lettuce in our home for most things, my husband simply tolerates it, my daughter complains about it, and my boys don’t even eat it (that I know of) because they are out doing their own grown-up thing.

All that aside, I’m totally on board with giving this kale apple slaw (above) via Summer Yule a try this summer, and I have a feeling it’s one dish my family might actually dig as much as I do!

Not only does this colorful summer coleslaw recipe look awesome, but it’s packed with nutrition too, you guys!

You can easily make this one at home using kale, an apple, dates, sunflower seeds, and red onion for the base, while leaning on a little mayo, yogurt, maple syrup, lime juice, and seasonings for the dressing.

Man, does it sound good!

  • Cottage Cheese Coleslaw

Ok, so I had to include this one, you guys!

We love cottage cheese in our home, and we have only recently begun cooking with it.

My husband has been making this amazing gluten-free cottage cheese bread for my daughter and me, and I’m excited to finally give another cottage cheese recipe a try.

All that said, this protein-packed product has become increasingly popular in all sorts of recipes, so you definitely need to check this one out.

Creamy and colorful summer coleslaw recipe made with cottage cheese

While I do love the idea of a traditional summer coleslaw recipe, I think this cottage cheese slaw (above) via Cottage Cheese Recipes might just be the one recipe on this list that I’m most excited about trying! –

While this one features that star ingredient, cottage cheese, it also includes many basic staples such as cabbage, carrots, mayonaise, apple cider vinegar, honey, and dijon mustar.

That said, this one is another great transitional summer into fall coleslaw recipe as it features apples, dried cranberries, and almonds!

Man, oh man, I cannot wait to give this one a try!

The best part? I’m pretty sure my entire family will eat this one up with zero complaint.

  • Mexican Coleslaw

Last, but certainly not least, I’ve got a mexican coleslaw recipe that will blow your socks off, you guys!

As a white as they come, American girl, I’m all about anything with a mexican flair.

Was that too much? Haha!

In all serious-ness though, I love mexican food and most anything I can make with mexican flavor notes gets a big thumbs up from me.

This Mexican coleslaw (above) – via The Immagints Table sounds super easy, as it calls for a pre-packaged coleslaw mix, and it also looks increbile on the plate.

You can quickly whip this one up in your kitchen using a coleslaw mix, honey, some staple seasonsings, lime juice, red wine vinegar, red onion cilantro, and garlic!

Easy, peasy, you guys!

Having a Healthy Summer

I’ve been on a mission to create a long list of healthy summer side dishes I can personally lean on because it’s so easy to fall into the trap of quick meals or take out this itme of year.

Fall-Spring is easier for me as I lean on lots of casseroles and soups filled to the brim with nutrients, but summer just hits differnt.

I don’t always want to turn my stove or oven on and sometimes I find myself in a cooking rut.

All that said, I’m working towards brancing out, trying new summer recipes and doing my best to have a healthy summer and I wish the very same for you!

From healthy fruit popsicles to other summer salad dishes I can’t wait to try.

Have a healthy summer, you guys!
